i mean being a prince fan and seeing him in concert in august which means i will have 2 free copies of his album but why is he doing it, its unheard of for an artist to just give away a brand new album

Because he recognizes the way the music industry is heading. Profits from albums rarely help the artist much to begin with (most profits go toward the record label), and act mainly as promotional material for the artist. By giving his music away for free, he's expanding his listenerbase and thus creating new potential customers to purchase his t-shirts and concert tickets, where he can really make money. Or perhaps he feels music should be free to begin with. Either way, I consider it a great move, and it's a slap in the face to the absurdly false claims the RIAA constantly spews.
