Just heard a single mother has been ordered to pay "the music industry" $220.000US for downloading 24 songs. It makes me sick.
How about the music industry go after the pirates in China, or even in the US who download, distribute and for profit sell artists music. No lets go after the single mother...Sure fine the lady a couple hundred bucks, but $220.000???
This country is sick. Just for this I wil NEVER EVER buy a CD again!

Answers: I agree with you 110%!! I agree, seems ridiculous to me... I think that in this situation, they are using the mother as a scape goat. they are punishing her as an example and to scare the larger "pirating" companies. It is because the mother has no power to fight back. The companies do. They wouldn't go down without a fight. Plus, everyone is a capitalist and big companies are praised rather than punished for thier actions. I believe the issue was not just that she had downloaded the songs, but that she had shared them with others online.
I'm sure the companies would have settled with her for much less money if she had agreed, but it was her choice to go to trial. That was a big risk which obviously didn't pay off for her.
I doubt she will have to pay it; they will settle with her.
