Then came the Seventies, and the first real taste of fame. Strangely, considering he's now one of the most respected screen actors alive, this came with the TV series The Electric Company, a kind of prototype Sesame Street that taught kids phonetics and grammar via sketches, songs and cartoons.

I hope you won a bet. check page 3 of this bio

Morgan Freeman was indeed "EZ-Reader" in the show The Electric Company, he is an award winning actor but to me he will always be EZ-Reader!

Morgan Freeman was a regular on the "Electric Company." I remember he played a character named Easy Reader, among others. I don't know if that was his first real break or not, though. Another famous person from that show was Rita Moreno. I think her big tag line was "Hey you guys!" They should rerun that show on Nick.

Well, it certainly wasn't his first acting gig. Morgan Freeman's first job, if you believe his IMDB listing, was in 1964. He first started working on The Electric Company in 1971 and lasted until 1977.

Even so, to call it a "jump start" is a little misleading. He had a string of forgettable TV appearances, including "Ryan's Hope" up until the mid 1980s. It really wasn't until his portrayal of Principal Joe Clark in "Lean On Me" that most people paid much attention, and from there his career soared.

So yes, he did basically get his true "start" on TEC, but he really has "Lean On Me" to thank for his current superstardom.

Interesting sidenote -- there was once a study that showed average actor salary vs. typical box office return, and Morgan Freeman topped the list. Meaning that he commands only a modest sum for his services, yet his return-on-investment is higher than any other actor out there. I think Tom Hanks was second on that list.

Pretty much.

It wasn't the first thing he did, but it certainly made him a household face - if not name.

The only things he did earlier were uncredited roles, or a significant part in a movie virtually nobody saw. So yeah, you could the Electric Company got him his start.
