According to Sam Mendes, who directed "American Beauty" on the commentary for that film, this was said to Bono by an enthusiastic fan at a U2 concert. He subsequently used the line when Mena Suvari's character mocks Thora Birch's character for taking interest in this odd boy saying "Oh, you love him...You want to have, like, 10,000 of his babies".
