Who do you blame for our infatuation with celebrities?!

Question: What would our society be like if we were as infatuated with teachers, scientists, heros, etc as much as we are with Britney Spears? Do you think WE are to blame for our own infatuation with celebrities or do you think the media is to blame? The thing is, the media is going to report on things we're all interested in. But it's a chicken and egg scenario - we're interested because the media is reporting on these celebutants while the media would say , we're reporting because you're interested....so which came first? What can be done to bring more attention to REAL heros instead of celebrities? I have no problem with celebrities. But let's face it....they are famous for doing their simple job which is to pretend to be something else (actors), or sing (musicians). It's not rocket science. Actors simply are good are pretending to be another person, plain and simple. So why do we idolize them like they've cured cancer or something?

That's a very good question. I was just asking a co-worker, "Why is Brittney Spears a star?" I mean, I can't name one song of hers that can be considered a classic. Yet, she can't scratch her nose without someone taking a picture of her doing it. This country is so messed up.

YOU. :(

Your stupidity is to blame. Anybody who is infatuated with actors, pop stars, etc is clearly an idiot

If you are infatuated with celebrities, I blame you.

Well, I actually think it would be horrible if we were infatuated with teachers, scientists, and heroes, because their motives would be less pure if they were doing it just to be noticed by the public and get really cute girls. So keep it the way it is, let people freak out over these worthless individuals that don't contribute to the world, while the real important people go under the radar.

TV.

its nobody fault people are just naturally attractive to them the money and fame who doesn't want that

well its the television and radio....

Be assured there are lots of us not only amazed at the inordinate amount of attention 'celebs' garner today but also genuinely concerned. Why concerned? Because it seems the more interest in the public and private lives of (entertainers mostly but not exclusively!) the less interest in the really important matters.
A few decades ago a well-known actor - or almost anybody famous - could live a fairly normal private life but not any more.
It even seems a candidate for office benefits from endorsement by any celebrity - even a lousy actor or a dissolute athlete. Which reminds: Candidates for high office must be either crooked or crazy or a combination of the two.

In answer to your question I offer Pogo's assertion: We has met the enemy and he is Us.

Oh, lighten up a bit. Peeking into celebrities' lives is just a fun pasttime for us all.
