I'm assuming you're referring to the original series and not Zombie's raping of a classic movie. Well, in the original Halloween (1978) Michael went after Laurie for no reason at all, that's what made it scary. I think he went after her because she went to his house to drop the key off and he started stalking her from then on. It wasn't until the second Halloween where they explained that Laurie was really Michael's sister and he's stalking her and trying to kill her in the hospital, and there you have it.
