Sorry but Eric Clapton, i`m a die hard fan, but i`m with you on Rory Gallagher, thing is there`s a guy from Leicestershire lil known but is a recording blues artist rated in the top 100, I jammed with him a few times, his name`s Ainsley Lister, he is fantastic..

Surprised to see someone else knew Ainsley Lister! I thought of him when I saw this question... also of John Squire, Johnny Marr, two of the big Eighties names... Jimmy Page and Richy Blackmore, obviously... my vote is for Page, because none of the others are in Led Zep....
I'm sorry, but I find these types of questions where you are asked to select 'the greatest', in any field, strange and ultimately unanswerable.
Surely there are a number of talented artists who have all enjoyed, and have influenced each other, among whom we can all nominate our personal favourites, or go by an objective criterion such as record sales, but there is no definitive 'greatest'.
At the moment I've got Davy Graham, Richard Thompson and Martin Carthy somewhere there up among the elite........
