So what happened to the great David Beckham experiment? Fell flat on it's fa!

Question: $250 million wasted by the MLS to get a soccer player who's best talents these days is to kiss up to Hollywood stars & being married to a Spice Girl(Whoopeedoo). As far as a player goes he was injured all the time & did nothing to contribute. All hype & no contribution. That's all David Beckmam was.

I agree.
Stupid decision, for someone who never plays and had so many 'injuries'.
Half the crowds at the games he's at are only there because they think hes good looking.

yeah i can't beleive that

Who cares about David Beckham. His wife has fake boobs and he's an idiot.

I don't believe they ever expected much real contribution. What they want is the spectacle, to bring more attention to American soccer... and that's what he's done.

And *gasp* he doesnt even score when he does play.. turns out he's an assist man. Damn it to hell...

Soccer really, really blows ya know.

i'm sure he's laughing all the way to Hollywood

david beckham is a waste of our american time.....we paid good money for him and for nothing

I mean to shout!!

Bit premature ain't ya ?? he still has to fully recover from injury, he has plenty of games left in him, and opportunity to play more for Galaxy will arise, besides the fact that the reason he was brought over has been a success he has brought attention to the game in the states and HOW many LA Galaxy shirts with his name on sold in a month ????? and the 250 million was hardly wasted when its recuperated in other ways. So prove it was wasted.

Yeah, to the great surprise of absolutely NO ONE!

I think he has to model underwear now. Good grief... how lame.

I think it was more for publicity than watching David actually play.

It was the same when Real Madrid signed him from Manchester United in 2003. If Perez hadn't spent $35 million pounds to put Beckham on the roster, he wouldn't have even cracked their starting midfield.

I wouldn't really say that the money was wasted though, Real estimates that they earned 20 times that in merchandising, as I suspect the Galaxy (and MLS) will in time. But the contract will never pay off on the pitch, as Beckham really isn't that talented a player. He's more concerned with being an international celebrity than a superstar footballer.

The sad part is that anyone who knows anything about the sport saw this coming months ago, and knew that it was all just a publicity plot to sell to the American fans. It seems to be working, but it won't last because American football fans don't get to see the best players compete in the United States; they're most all in Europe instead.

The on-field performance wasn't up to expectations due to injuries and a fairly lousy team. But MLS plans to expand to 18 clubs from today's 13 clubs. You have San Jose next season and Seattle in 2009 (at least). You will probably see a 16th club in 2009 to make the schedule balanced. Then I heard 2 more clubs by 2012.

Do you think cities would have shown the same amount of demand if Beckham wasn't playing in MLS? I highly doubt it.

He's the Kanye West of soccer. Beckham appeals to all parts of society, just like Kanye West's rap songs. There are better players who appeal to a more defined group (e.g. Cuauhtemoc Blanco for Hispanic fans), but none have the wide appeal of Beckham.

Now if MLS could figure out how to increase TV viewership...
