I found out on the fan web-site [www.crosscanadianragweed.com] that he uses G and C. You can ask around there for someone that has caught one in the audience. The C & G are pretty common. Those are the two most popular keys. I saw a 13 second clip on youtube.com that has him using a neck holder and doing the one man band sort of thing. There are only two holders that I know of; Hohner, and Lee Oskar. That might narrow it down.
I usually recommend purchasing a harmonica online. In your case, you can go to a music store and try them with a bellows. They won't let you blow into it.
Strangely enough, 1847.com [Seydel] is the only harmonica company that puts sound samples on the internet.
The harmonica is played with the mouth, and the shape of the mouth and the player's technique impacts on the sound that comes out of the harmonica. If you are not doing the one man band thing, the shape of your hands also has an impact.
Many harmonica players use their own microphone and tweak their amplifiers like you wouldn't believe. You will know when you come across one of those guys when you see them using a different mike for vocals than harmonica, and/or they use a foot pedal. I can't say that Cody does that. Amplified acoustic playing is very popular in it's own right. You can totally change the sound your harmonica produces acoustically by tuning and gapping it to your own personal taste. I can totally change the sound on a harmonica to the point an expert would never pick up the brand by listening to it.
Copying the sound of Little Walter Jacobs is an obsession with millions of harmonica players all over the world. Some do a very good job. For instance, Tom Ball has a book out on Little Walter Jacobs and Big Walter Horton's riffs. He doesn't use the same harmonica they used, and he has no idea about the microphone and amplifier. This is a good thing because there are harmonica players that spend a significant amount of time and money looking for the Little Walter sound.
Little Walter used whatever microphone and amplifier that the house had when he walked into a club. That's right! He used a set up like you probably had in your high school gym. A low tech voice mic and amplifier with no bells and whistles at all.
I highly recommend that you purchase a harmonica that you think sounds good and loose this obsession. Sounding like your favorite artist is a sticky question that you are not going to have an answer to any time soon.
