Why do so many people care so much about celebrity's?!
Question: Why does anyone care what these people are doing? Its not like you know them...or will ever meet them. Why do people buy magazines like "Hello" and "OK" "Heat"? Why has society evolved to become obsessed with singers, actors, actresses, so called celebrity stars? Why does society worship celebrity status? What function does idolising certain people of certain professions serve? I don't "get it." I simply couldn't care less about what they are or aren't doing..... Why don't people idolise the people in society who make a difference? People with skills and talents. Yes I can "admire" the talents and skills of sports people, and people who have achieved great things... but NOT the likes of Jade Goody or Paul Danone! Why do people want to be famous? I have MORE respect for people like doctors or people who have a particular skill, talent, ability than the fame hungry no-marks.

I have no idea why people idolize celebrities. There are a few actors and actresses that I enjoy watching in a new movie that they are in, when they come out, but I don't care what they do day to day, who they marry or even when they have baby. I think the people who care about these things live in a fantasy world. That so sad as their own lives must be so empty, they need to fill it with other peoples lives. I can't even name bands but I know songs, just not who sings them. I have to many other things that are real to think about. I am glad that you have better things to do in your life than to be consumed with the nonsense of celebrities. You must be happier and more rounded in your life than those other people who fill their lives with nonsense.
Once upon a time most Americans could have told you who won the nobel prize last year, nowadays very few can tell you that.

I agree with you...the majority of people with brain cells and a life don't give a **** about these pple..its a minority who give the impression that we all care about those losers....
If people have some talent Good luck to them I wish them well..but like you rightly point out the majority are just no mark skid marks....
Most people like to have distractions from the more serious issues like the WAR that is going on. It is in most peoples natures to gossip so I figure this allows the masses to judge people and compare themselves in a relativly distanced way.

I wonder the same thing myself, why do people worship at the alter of celebrity, they do nothing and serve no one, i would and do only support and give money to people and organisations that make a difference to peoples lives. Perhaps that seems a bit worthy, but can't understand the likes of those you have cited, just what talent!! do they have, none.
Because many people live in the world and for the world. They let the world dictate to them what is worthy of our worship. Media tells us what to wear, where to live, what to buy, who your friends should be, who's cool, who's not, who we should be like, who we should idolize. I suggest getting to know Jesus. Worship Him. Learn what is important in the world from Him, not society, not media.

Its kind of hard to ignore celebrities they are everywhere, but you have to admit that some do use their fame for good and to help the world not all but some. But why people go bananas for them well I don't know why either!
i agree, i mean jade goody is as thick as a post and shes a celbraty and people who have real talent like my mate who can play the piano ( hes 12) he can do all great pieces and that song that goes one oclock two oclck three oclock rock! join citizens as we burn heat down to the ground and erase jade goody from history
If somebody reaches celebrity status with no discernible talents, skills etc, then they deserve at least some credit for their achievement. Your example of Jade Goody is a good one. No talent save a penchant for putting her foot in her mouth, no looks without the services of a size-able portion of the cosmetics industry and, on the face of it, thick as two short planks.
I don't subscribe to the cult of celebrity but you gotta hand it to people like good old Jade for having overcome lack of anything remotely resembling talent and emerging rich and famous.

It is the human condition that we need to look to others for inspiration. In the past it was God, Christ, a saint or our monarch. All of these have been marginalized by a secular society leaving a vacuum to be filled. The feeble minded take inspiration from the slightly lesser feeble minded.
It is because there are too many shallow, bored people in this world with low self-esteem who attempt to vicariously live their lives through the celebrity of the famous. What a sad commentary on society as a whole and the human condition. There are so many important issues in this world they could concern themselves with.
“Why do people want to be famous?” I’m not sure this is true. As Bill Murray once said on the subject, “If you have a choice of being either rich or famous, take rich.” To wit, celebrities rarely lead the private lives they wished they could live like the rest of us if they weren’t famous.
I once read that This Is Your Life stopped doing shows involving "ordinary people" because viewers would switch off. They were only interested in the "famous people" ones. I agree with you about skills and talents. For example, on the one hand, many talented singers/musicians go on stage every night and perform for little or no recognition for love of the music, and on the other hand you have the likes of Britney Spears ripping off her fans by miming badly, and making millions while she's at it. Essentially, these people are celebrities because they're marketed, rather than any actual work they've done. Do I sound bitter?
Well said, what worries me is that young people really do look up to them and think its normal to do so. I also find it very odd that people want to be famous and cant understand why people like us really don't want that.
Maybe kids see it as the only root to riches. they want the big houses (I wouldn't mind that either) but they fail to realise that most rich people have got there without being public wannabees.

I don't "care" about them. I never buy "Hello" to see pics of Jordan n Pete's new baby or Charl n Gav's new toilet roll or Kerry Katona's latest bowel movement etc etc. Thats tedious. Most of those "celebs" just get on my nerves. They are over hyped Z-list famewhores who would sell their personal secrets and pics of their kids etc to the highest bidder. NAASTY. I don't admire them one bit and I marvel that some people do.
There are some celebs who I am interested in because I like what they do - ie I admire them as an actor or a singer etc. But then tbh I prefer not to know too much about them. I prefer the fantasy, lol! More often than not when you meet these people in real life and find out about them they are just a big disappointment. I prefer to admire them for what they do rather than who they are. I have read a couple of "celeb" biographies though - being a Dr Who fan I was given a copy of Billie Piper's book last Xmas and found it interesting, if just for her battle with eating disorders (been there myself) and the crazy life she led as a teen popstar . . .
I found it refreshing how honest she was and how she admitted that showbiz, especially for a young star, is a very nasty, greedy, dirty explotative world and she came close to being very messed up by it . . .
In my opinion – celebrity is different now than it was back then. Now it’s less of a fascination…and more of an obsession. Do you know the “shock jock” Howard Stern? They took a poll of who listened and why and the most common answer was…”I want to hear what he will say next” well the same is true for a train wreck like Britney Spears. I am 110% obsessed with celebrity gossip. I buy every magazine and watch everything on tv while sitting in front of my laptop…and why? Because that’s what I like to do, it’s entertaining. Some people need CNN, I need E! I can’t tell you much about world news…am I proud of it, no. But I’m 27 years old and have a hard time staying focused and paying attention to the idiot some of you voted for so…this is my thing. When Anna Nicole passed, my boss the CEO of a major company said lets have a moment of silence since we all know Cristina was addicted to her show. And when people want to know what happened on tv last night, they come straight tom my cube. Everyone has to contribute something to the table right…well there is my contribution along with a compliment on your shoes (if I like them…if not I just wont say anything). And im one of the top planners here so go ahead and think what you want but the bottom line is I still get my work done 100% and collect my paycheck that pays for my internet, cable and magazine collection. Lol. Why are men (and some women) so sports obsessed. My husband will have every tv in the house on a different game as well as sports center and the laptop in front of him for fantasy. It’s the same thing, it’s what interests you.
Also – don’t forget a lot of celebrities make a difference and should be idolized. They have skills and talent – not everyone can do what they do and not everyone can do it with as much grace as some. Please note im not speaking of the Britney/Lindsay/Paris celebrity, im speaking of the Denaro, Jolie/Pitt, Clooney, Affleck actors who have their hand in charity, politics and just general good deeds. As for the people you mentioned…I don’t know who they are. I’m gonna guess you aren’t from the States…
You should absolutely have more respect for doctors – they heal people. Some people are just famous…they stepped in sh*t and it turned to an oscar for no reason at all…but acting is considered an art and not everyone can do it.
