Atonement: Keira Knightley's reputation?!

Question: I have not seen this film yet but have read about it and its contents. I may not see it after my discovering that Keira Knightley has many partial nude scenes. She plays a very sexual role... To me, this will indefinitely tarnish her reputation as an actress. The sweet, cute, innocent girl from "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Pride and Prejudice" is now on her way to become a typical, sexual, flaunting hollywood actress. Nudity and sexual sounds and movements are not necessary for a movie to be realistic and passionate simultaneously.
Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

I disagree with your thoughts on her reputation. Keira has seemed to me has always been the girl next door with a wink, in Bend it like Beckham she wasn't a sweet girly girl, but rather a fun loving tomboy. In the Pirates trilogy, she has always been someone that never looked or felt comfortable in the expectations and behaviors for women of that time period. Remember in the first film her character began by singing the pirates song that the other pirate told her never to sing because it was bad luck or something to that effect. From there to her telling Will about her dreaming about him and her father telling her it was inappropriate to speak about that. Also, earlier in that scene, the new dress she is given, that comes from England I believe, makes it hard for her to breathe and later on at the ceremony it takes her breath away and she almost dies (until Jack saves her), all this leading to the last film where she is basically a pirate and chosen as the leader of the pirates! So she wasn't miss innocent, but the pirates films were a mix of adult and family friendly themes but her character was never completely sweet and innocent-again, she was the girl next door with the wink. Then she did Domino-where she showed her breasts if I remember correctly in a love scene in the desert. If it wasn't her body, well, it was still implied that her character is topless and having a sex scene. It wasn't the main focus of the movie-it was the real life story of a model turned bounty hunter. So it was an edgier role than before-but it wasn't a completely different thing because she has had characters, as I mentioned above, that had that little edge-that weren't conventional-aka the little wink. Then she makes Pride and Prejudice which is based on a classic book that has as a protagonist a somewhat unconventional woman of her time-she refuses to marry someone, whether they are rich or not-if she doesn't love him. She actually loves a man that isn't very personable or charming or witty, but is someone different like her, and they may have their disagreements and awkard moments, but they mesh well. Both somewhat unconventional, and don't always act as expected in their time period, but are each other's equal. Then we come to Atonement which doesn't focus on sex in a gratuitous manner, but rather is actually vital to the plot and, in the bigger picture, the main theme is regret and as the title states atonement, or rather atoning for one's sins. I don't think you should judge the film or Keira without at least reading the novel it is based on or having seen the film. Yes, there are love scenes-implied I believe, and there is some nudity, but it isn't just her character. But it is something that is actually vital to the story-it isn't gratuitous, this actually is what drives the story. To spoil the story a bit, because someone really young witnesses Keira's character's love scene and later witnesses another sex scene with different characters, someone is wrongly accused of rape, and Keira's character is separated from the love of her life. The character, her little sister, tries to atone for her mistake-that is the point of the movie. In my opinion, I don't believe this makes Keira a typical sexual flaunting hollywood actress, but rather someone who would do a topless or sex scene in a movie if it was vital to the film-if it has some meaning. This is only my opinion, I haven't read any interviews or heard her say anything on tv, so I really don't know what her stance is on nudity and what roles she picks, but I don't think she minds showing her body because it isn't like she is doing a porno-it is rather because it is called for in the script and her character is required to do so and I don't think she has a problem with showing her body because she was nude on the cover of Vanity Fair a while back-and it was in a classy magazine not a Playboy pictorial. I mean, in the end, she has the choice of whether or not to accept a script and to choose to play whatever character she wants, knowing that her character will be naked or have a sex scene-or not. Atonement also isn't some summer action flick with sex scenes that is mainly aimed at teens and men or is trying to be someone like Carmen Electra-who is obviously hired to be the sex pot-and not necessarily for her academy award level acting (no offense meant to her, but I am merely trying to illustrate my point)but rather it is a period film that is obviously going for the Academy Award route. Sometimes sex and nudity isn't necessary-agreed-but in this film, it is actually necessary in the story, because it actually is a main plot point. Read the novel and/or see the film and then you will see what I mean. She has done films that range from action to family to comedy to drama, which means she is also a great actress that can fit into almost any genre. In the end, I think this film will further cement her reputation as a serious actress, let's not forget she has already been nominated for an Academy Award for best actress for Pride & Prejudice. :)
