Because they are a nobody and want to be a somebody and be noticed and excepted.

We live in a society that craves attention and the Warhol 15.
Because of this, people will go out of their way to get it anyway they can. Even though they know their "friends" list is actually idolizing the person they are claiming to be, the people that do this still are able to get a sense of recognition from it.

For entertainment mostly, I'd suppose. Plus their lives might just be miserable so they feel the need to pretend to be someone who's not miserable to make them happy. =/
