i haven't seen that movie but i totally LOVE Meryl Streep. She is such an awesome actress!!
I love Meryl Streep, but I like Helen Mirren and Ellen Burstyn better. With Streep, I always know that she has made an acting choice. It's not natural enough for me. When Helen Mirren played the lead in Prime Suspect, she WAS Jane Tennyson - you could not see her technique. When she played the Queen, she WAS the Queen.
I remember seeing Streep many years ago in Still of the Night. At the end of the movie, she has a monologue. She was wonderful - but I was aware that I was watching an actress doing a monologue. Doing it very well, but acting.
Now, I've seen her in some things where that wasn't true. One was a TV movie called Do No Harm or First Do No Harm, and in Death Becomes Her and Postcards from the Edge. In those - as just some examples - I didn't see the wheels turning.
Watch Miranda Richardson in "Damage" some time and see one of the most brilliant performances ever on film - completely visceral.
