To me, "fake" means that the songwriting isn't credible... meaning, that the songs don't come "From the heart", and aren't relevant to the singer's own life.
Under that definition, I don't think there have been many new "real" rockstars since Kurt Cobain died. Maybe one or two... can't think of them at the moment, though.
I didn't know you had to write your own songs to be a rock star. I might be wrong but I don't think Elvis ever wrote at all.
