It's about domestic violence and because of that ONE person not having any self confidence to do anything at all.,
It sounds to me they are afraid to live their lives due to the influence the previous significant other had over them. They don't venture out and explore possibilities the way others do.

I remember reading that the gist of the song is talking about her(clarkson) parents. So I would assume that the line in question she is talking about her relationship with her parents and how they treated her.

Supposedly it is about abuse and has a lot to do with her parents' split. She is saying she was afraid of her realtionship with her father and I think she is afraid of other relationships because of it.
I couldn't say for sure but since I knew it first as a solo of Kelly's it's how I always took it (as a father/daughter or the result or divorce on a child) type situation. I mean I related to it that way myself to do a lot of the things my dad did to me (not physically but emotionally as a kid) It's definately affected my adult relationships.
