Halle Berry - a question?!

Question: Why did Halle Berry go all ga-ga and hysterical when she won her oscar and scream that she is 'the first black woman to ever win an oscar?' She isn't black. She is mixed. Her father is of African origin and her mother is caucasian. So why call herself 'black?' Why didn't she class herself as white? She is as 'white' as she is 'black' after all...

I have often wondered this... No offence intended, but I just wondered why so many people who have one black parent and one white, class themselves as black singers/black actresses etc? Isn't it grossly offenisve and insulting to the 'white' parent?

Totally agree with the first reply here from poster number 1. It's OK to insult white people but not black people. This is not a racist remark, but a fact. You can say whatever the hell you like or do whatever the hell you like to white people, but you must never offend blacks and ethnics. The amount of rules and regulations in place now to protect blacks, and the amount of thing s that have to be changed for them (words like blackboard and baa baaa black sheep etc;) is laughable, but the same things rarely apply to whites.

Yes Halle Berry is NOT black - and she IS mixed. So she is NOT the first *BLACK* actress to get an oscar. Sorry but she ISN'T! And if she chose to call herself; 'white' (and she IS as *white* as she is *black*!) then all the blacks would get all huffy and offended then, and say that she was disrespecting her black sisters and brothers. And that just wouldn't do would it? Offend white people by all means, but blacks? Never. It just ain't allowed!

So I see your point crazygal. Halle Berry has no right to call herself BLACK, despite all the crap and hoo-har about how people 'mixed race people used to have put up with being called black all those years ago blah blah' We have ALL had to put up with a lot of sh*t in our lives; not just blacks, so quit bitchin' poster number 2!

I totally agree. It's just that it's ok to offend white people, apparently for all the "evil" that we've done in the past. Makes you puke doesn't it?

They claim themselves as black because there was a time in this country when, no matter how much fame you had, if you had even a speck of black in you, you were a N*****. I'm sorry to put a damper on your little blast. But it has nothing to do with insulting either parent, white or black. Her mother doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Why should you? A person who Halle doesn't know, and doesn't have to prove herself to. Now, I'm not trying to offend you, but I'm sure that there was a time in her life when Halle couldn't walk down the street with her mother without being stared at. Or when no matter what she said the little white kids around her STILL called her black. That's why. Because she learned to become proud of herself as a whole. And she is proud of both sides of her heritage, obviously, because otherwise, NOONE would even KNOW that her mother was white. She doesn't hide it. But she has the right to call herself what ever she wants to call herself. She likes being black. Now, don't get me wrong, because I don't even like Halle Berry, but I just thought you might want to know the reason why. Since you asked.
