Um, she really doesn't sport the bald look so much anymore. She keeps it very short, much like a pixie these days.
Back in the mid-80s, she shaved her head as a statement; that she wasn't going to be another Madonna or whatever pop singer was the flavor of the moment at the time.
The idea was that people would have to deal with her as a singer, an artist, and, perhaps more important, a person. Take away the hair and perhaps any sort of current fashion sense of the day, and you'll have to deal with her on her level.
I was shocked when I first saw her on MTV years ago, but I can certainly see her point.
BTW, she may have started something. I noticed throughout the 90sup until even today more women being brave enough to get their heads shaved, even if only temporary just to try it at least once in their lives. Some kept the shaved look for months, some even years! And no, they're not all lesbians or drug-addicted pop idols. Sinead presented the idea that (like men) a woman can choose to be bald if she so desires in spite of what the societal norm might be.
Bet during her heyday, though, she never had to worry about a bad hair day...
