I think it's strange that people didn't know who he was. He's been in tons of movies here since the 1990s. I think maybe because he was always changing his look and his accent people couldn't recognize him from one movie to the other.

It's so tragic, I'm Australian but live here in the States and lots of people here have told me how sad they were to hear of his death. I still can't believe it! May he rest in peace.
Why would you think you are? He's had hit films here for many years, and the series "Roar" played on network TV and is rerun on the Sci Fi Channel.
Americans would be rather dense if they didn't know who Heath Ledger is, so it does seem an odd question.
"Hot" doesn't keep anyone from dying. We've lost many beautiful, attractive people, whether by accident or their own design. It's been that way since Hollywood's Silent era and it will continue as long as we have stage, screen and TV.
