Question: Everyone seems to agree she's been engaging in self destructive behavior for a year and a half or so. But at the same time I gather her performing qualities on the stage and in the studio have not diminished from whatever they first were. So I guess what I'm trying to say is: is she faking it all to keep her name in the headlines and keep the CD sales rolling?

I don't see why she needs dozens of police to escort her ambulance to the hospital unless she's dead, and she clearly isn't, so yes, I think she's starving for attention and simply tired of singing, dancing, and being a teen idol. Her film efforts failed, so she's getting back at Hollywood.
It really wouldn't surprise me if it's all a big publicity stunt.

I agree with calico, why oh why, does anyone need an entire police troop, ambulance and all that to check into a hospital, this is really strange. Then there is the whole Dr. Phil mess, who by the way is an idiot......anyway, stay tuned as they say at TMZ, there is bound to be more.

Really? Take a look at some of her first concerts. Then look at the Mtv Awards and the other concerts she's held in the past 2 years. There's a huuuge difference. When she first came out you could tell she worked hard, and now she doesn't do anything but lose her mind on live television and the internet.
But I do agree that some of this may just be for more press. She is notorious for calling up the paps HERSELF, not her assistants, but Britney herself, and telling them everything from where she'll be to who's she's with. Hell everyone around her right now that isn't her family works or worked for some form of media outlet. She might have a mental disorder or whatever, but I think a lot of it just stems from how she grew up. She's the female Michael Jackson.
I truly believe she is as screwed up as they come. Maybe we should all stop buying her music and get her out of the spotlight completely. Then she won't have anyone to blame but herself!
No, I do not think Britney Spears is faking it all. In my opinion, she needs Professional Help and the Media needs to stop reporting on her activities. It's sending the wrong message to young girls.
