As a teacher in a high school,9-12,what's the best way to handle a student c!

Question: I'm a teacher who is also gay, and I'm not sure how to handle students in the hallway, and sometimes the classroom, who yell that another student is a f*g. Most times the students are just yelling at a friend, but I don't think that really matters.

Also, I have many students, some who know that I'm a gay male, who use the word "gay" to describe something in the negative, such as: "Homework is so gay! I just hate it!" We've discussed how this can be offensive to others and how it just reinforces stereotypes (like when someone says "Don't throw like a girl"-this reinforces a negative stereotype that women are weak/bad @ sports), but it's so prevalent that I don't feel like I'm making a dent.

I don't want to turn a blind eye to this- but I also don't want to make a federal case out of it. Sometimes a joke is just a joke. I don't want to have to bust every student, but I can't sit back and do nothing. How do I get these students to curb this unacceptable behavior?

My boss is gay, and I used to use that term in a negative manner. One day he just said "Can't you find another word?" and it was hard, but i'd eventually think of something else. "Stupid" was something I used a lot.

And This really shouldn't be in the "celebrity" section, you'd get a lot more good answers if it were somewhere else.

I think you should walk up to the person and say "Don't say things like that" and if you catch them at it again, get even more serious each time, you see, I'm only 13, but people call people that all the time, and I'm NOT gay, but I think it's really offensive to gay and lesbian people, its just really rude, people deserve to be able to love who they want, its life. And, I also get pretty mad at people I say, "DON'T SAY THAT WORD. ITS REALLY MEAN!" and they keep doing it.

But, as for your question, I reccomend you just tell them to stop over and over and if it keeps happening tell your boss/princible, and ask what he/she can do about it.

The student is absolutely correct in calling you a *** and you should accept that.

Ew, ur gay? Thats gross.

well, look at it this way, in another 50 or 100 years when the rest of the country is INFECTED, you won't have any problems. when are you people gonna learn , YOU CAN'T LEGISLATE LOVE. you are NEVER going to change those students minds. you can sugar coat what you are, with any nice sounding word you like, but, no matter how thin you slice it, it's still boloney.

talk to them personaly. tell them that its very rude and you wont accept that behavior. tell them that you will call parents if you have to

i'm in middle school, and i hear the word 'gay' being thrown around a lot. i think the misuse of that word is a huge problem just like the overuse of the word 'like.'

i'm not sure what you should do. um...maybe you could try explaining to them...well...

what kind of teacher are you?

cuz if you were a social studies or language arts teacher, you could have them do a project on words that are commonly used incorrectly...and have someone do 'gay.'

i think we all would agree that talking to them would not work.

perhaps you could talk to your fellow teachers and see if they have any ideas
