Heath wasn't an obscure celebrity. I've known who he was for years.
totally agree and today at his funeral an x footballer who was disgraced out of theAust. league shows his grinning face at the service.I'm an Aussie, so had heard of him ,now all these try hard wanna bees are coming out of the woodwork?
After Brokeback Mountain, I thought everybody knew who Heath Ledger was! Actually, he was a great actor and his talent is a loss. He was an artist in Hollywood, far above some of the most popular actors in talent, in my opinion.
It's weird that you haven't heard of him. Maybe he wasn't as well known as actors like Johnny Depp or Al Pacino but he was famous enough. Heath Ledger won a best actor award for the movie "Brokeback Mountain" and he has some other good movies too. He plays the Joker in the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight". The first time I saw Heath Ledger was in a movie called "10 Things I Hate About You". I was around 10 years old and I am 17 now and I have known him ever since. So he was known, I am not sure why you did not hear of him.

Heath Ledger wasn't really a gossip column regular like Brad Pitt or even Orlando Bloom. His death is such a big deal because he was one of the greatest actors of our generation and was on his way to become one of the greats. He was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar and was highly tipped to win. He was very well respected by most other actors, old and new, and generally people in the movie industry felt the same way --- hence the big reaction.
I'm Grew up in Australia & theres this show there called 'HOME & AWAY' & he was on that when he was a teenager & i saw it,luved him & i saw all his movies after that! My fav was '10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU'

I am Australian so I saw him in early stuff he did in Australia. He was a pretty popular celeb though and in alot of popular movies, but he wasn't out and about like alot of celebs or have scandals. You always hear of those ones more often.
Heath Ledger was one of the brightest and moste talented actors of our time. His death was a tragedy.
But you are right, the press went into hyper drive with stories about his death. The press reflect the great human disease - idiocy. This is why you can read about Britney Spears on the front page of a major paper - but a story about the fed lowering interest rates appears on page 3. Go figure.
Heath was a celebrity but he was one of the rare gems who preferred to do Indie Films and saw acting as a craft, an art and not a way to get famous and get rich.
I'm so gonna miss him...he was such a sweet guy.
