computers can do amazing things nowadays. If your pitch is off or if you sound horrible in the recording studio, they can change your voice with the computer to make it be in tune. It's all about looks now. Not about talent.

Rihanna is a GREAT singer!

Rihanna has an amazing voice! she preformed so well! you need to get your ears checked girl.....

Jewel sings horribly!!!!!!!!!

Today "singers" are more actors than singers. If the act is good, the face cute, body great, that's about all that matters.

Yeah. Most singers back in the day didn't use computers for that.

Yerr, I agree with "snugglebunny_in_denmark", computers do do amazing things, record labels look for people who they can market theses days. Shame, there's alot of really talented people out there, who just aren't getting signed.

It's all in the editing. I've been saying this for years. Artist are typically chosen for appearance as well as ability. Does anyone really think that Sanjaya could sing? I rest my case.
The best test to tell if a singer can sing or a guitarist can play is to listen to unplugged versions of their songs. This will really set apart the artists from the actors.

yes ive noticed.

its all about the looks not the talent anymore. i miss the good old days that singers used to be a dime in a dozen.

It's false to argue that 'it's all about looks these days'. The truth is that sex sells and that this has entered the music business such that it *appears* as if looks are all that matters. Yet think about this: talent is always talent and will always sell. All that has changed is that untalented people (or at least people whose talent *isn't* singing) have entered the arena of MAKING MONEY; not all 'artists' are interested in their art. Many are only after MONEY and if they can make it via recording industry trickery and gullible, shallow people (typically very young adults) buying what they produce, they'll do it.
Yet one ought to be fair to those who still have great talent, and who are still around.

A part of the reason for this phenomenon is that some of those WITH talent are also very attractive and have no qualms about exploiting this just as much as those who *only* have attractiveness to sell. Mariah Carey is a classic example of this, having had breast augmentation - and being obvious to the point of crudity about it - doing lad's mag photo spreads in which she talks about her sexual preferences, etc. This is a saddening thing that has served to bring the MUSIC industry down with its current overabundance of talentless 'eye-candy' (many of which are little more than street-walkers).

Ultimately, what *sells* best will prevail where the mindset is money over art/talent. It's far easier even for the talented performer (if he or she has the looks) to FAKE IT for money than to practice singing and/or playing an instrument for hours every day.

Rihanna has a unique voice like a lot people out right now. You might not like how she sings her songs but she isn't a HORRIBLE singer. When it comes to can't singing turn to the disney channel............EVERYONE and their brother sings on that channel and it makes me sick!

yeah, it's all about the showiness now instead of capability.
