I believe that Nirvana may have disbanded sometime around 1996 with about half of their new record completely recorded. After watching the documentary "Kurt Cobain About A Son" it seemed that Kurt was having trouble expressing himself musically with the band, but also at the same time he said he could never go on and play with another band because he wouldn't have that connection he has with Dave and Krist. I believe that Kurt would have left Nirvana to pursue a painting career because he said he almost went to art school. Also I believe he would record one or two solo acoustic albums never returning to electric guitar or a band. I think eventually near the end of the decade (the 90's) he would just stop making music for the mass public because of his disgust with the whole entertainment business.
Kurt was a complex person and a free spirit. It can be hard to say what he would do. In one interview he claims to have "officially" broken up with Nirvana at least ten times in one year and this is while they were famous.
