Personally, I think it is because they don't want to end up like brintey spears or lindsay lohan. They want to keep their faces hidden so when they go out in public they aren't reconised and the don't have the pressure of the papparzi all the time which is why a lot of stars go down.

Because they don't want you to, that's the point of the band. But if you look up the band Blur, then one of the lead singers is in that band and not in animation form.
That's their gimmick. Look at a picture of the lead singer of Blur, and you'll see what the lead singer of Gorillaz looks like.
