Question: we watched that movie in my chorus class at school (because were singing seasons of love) but i missed the first class we watched it and only saw the second half. So what happens in the first half? and why does angel die? and whats wrong with Rodger and Mimi?

In the beginning of the movie "Rent"..The guy Mark he's on his bike and sings the song called "rent" because they can't pay the rent because they don't have money to pay, and the guy that plays the "rich man" betrayed them because he was once good friends with them and since he married a rich woman, he became very stingy and everybody in the nieghborhhood is singing with him because they agree with Mark.Than there's Rodger, Mark's best friend and roommate, Rodger is on the roof and starts singing the song "Glory" which is about a girl he fell in love and she was addicted to heroin and she tested HIV positive and died, so when she died, Rodger had a hard time letting it go, right after Rodger finished singing the song Glory,thats when Mimi comes along and sings the song "Light my Candle, this is when they meet for the first time..but Rodger was very mean to Mimi because she happens to look like his ex girlfriend who also was addicted to heroin, and Rodger had a hard time letting go of his past. John is the the tall black man, whose friends with Mark and Rodger, he gets beaten up by gangsters and took everything from him, thats when Angel comes along and takes care of him and they both fall in love.Mark went out with this girl name Maureen, who dumped him for a girl name Joanne..and Mark and Joanne meet for the first time, at first they felt uncomfortable but slowly they became good friends. And then there's Angel who took care of John and falls in love with him and became his girlfriend, Angel was the one that brought everyone to life, she made everyone become a big family and when Angel dies in the movie, everyone was falling apart. Thats the beginning of the movie
Angel dies in the movie because she was HIV positive..the whole story is based on HIV.
Mimi and Rodger are in love...but Mimi is addicted to heroine just like Rodger's ex girlfriend was, who died HIV positive and Rodger doesn't want to go through that again and he's trying to convince Mimi to let heroin go because it will destroy her and he thought that maybe he will lose her like he lost his ex, and he doesn't want to lose her because he loves her very much.
This movie "Rent" was based on a true event..The guy who wrote the script was gay, and he was HIV positive because he slept with a guy and he didn't know he was HIV, and the doctor knew about it but didn't bother telling him, he kept on saying that its nothing and totally ignored it and he died .
Well Angel died cuz of aids, and Roger and Mimi were havin problems in the relationship and he wanted her 2 stop being a stripper and doing drugs, cuz that's how he lost his first girlfriend, but she didn't want 2. He only did that cuz he cared.
