What are your thoughts on Mariah Carey passing Elvis for most #1 singles?!

Question: As much as I love Elvis, someone has to pass him. I mean, it has been years and years since he was alive and putting out music.

Now as far as Mariah Carey goes, she is very talented, and I could see her passing him up if she was still the same Mariah she started out being, but the fact of the matter, the artist she is now, is good, but not the great artist she once was. She doesn't focus on vocals anymore like she used to.

However, she will be remembered as a legend in the music industry and I can honestly say that she deserved the number ones she got. Wish she would have stuck to what she was doing, but she worked very hard and deserves everything she got.

I'm really sad.
I think Elvis was a whole hell of a lot better than Mariah Carey (though her voice is amazing- it's also annoying)

she has a good voice, demonstrated best in "emotions", but elvis is king, i don't understand how she could've done it...maybe it's only because more people listen to music nowadays than when elvis was making that great jailhouse rock!

Well one thing is for sure, she is nowhere near as amazing as Elvis was. Long live the King

She hasn't beaten the Beatles yet...

That's how much the music scene really sucks now. This is the stuff that hits # 1. And the record companies wonder why sales are down.

i thought mariah carey was a has been of the 90's in my book elvis is the greatest. mariah carey does not deserve that honor

Ripper speaks for me. When people this mediocre are best sellers what does that tell you about the scene.

I know there are plenty of talented people out there who can't get a toehold on this idiot market... but connected people like Carey make it without any real talent or contribution to musical originality.

Then again, I was never an Elvis fan, so the basic question means little to me.

i think thats really sad. i hate her

Like Joey Lawrence used to say on Blossom "WHOA!"
I don't know her work really after '96, but I will confess I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE to sing "I Don't Wanna Cry" at karaoke because of those high notes at the end! That soprano in me!

Two different eras. I don't think anyone serious would think that Mariah is better or more meaningful than Elvis to music history. But she is consistent. She seems to have a good song every year with good production values. Slow and steady...

Just like how Cal Ripken beat Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak. No one would take Cal over Lou in a big game. But Cal was consistent.

That said, Elvis did make a lot of bad albums, too. He had some bad advice, and maybe lost 10 years of when he could have had many more No. 1s.
