Are most comedians really all sad and depressed?!

Question: I have just finished reading a biography of Bill Hicks and it seems his life was rather an unhappy one even before his illness. In fact many great comics seem to have a reputation for great unhappiness off stage.
Richard Pryor
John Belushi
Jerry Sadowitz
Rob Newman
Jo Brand and many more
Do you think that people who have a tendency towards depression are attracted to comedy or do you think that it is the work that makes you sad after a while?

I have often pondered on this question, and I would like to imagine them to be funny and happy all the time, but like you sair, Bill Hicks had an unhappy life as did and do other comedians. I think maybe a reason for this is that their whole life is comedy, and they get sick of it when they are just relaxing in normal life, it is probably a psychological thing, where they automatically decide to not make jokes, or they see the world in a glass half empty sort of way. To become a comedian they must of had to be funny in the first place.

It also depends on what the comedian jokes about, because comedians such as Russell Howard joke about silly things and happy things, and as far as I know he doesn't have a tendency to be depressed, I think their outlook on life reflects their humour, and Bill Hicks certainly joked about serious things.

Well Owen Wilson did have that weird depressed moment late last year, so add him to your list

hmmm

It's kind of true, but there's logic behind it. I mean, if you have a bad childhood, humor will help you get through it, no matter what. I was watching a show the other day, I forgot what, and one of the guys was on a wheelchair. A girl was like "Haha, you're pretty funny"
And he's like
"Well, when you're like me, you have to be"

Kinda like that.

nope not all...
actually some are very happy..
but see alot of times people think theyre happy cause of the money but thats never true..money doesnt make u happy.!!
family and friends and people u care about make u happy..!!
