George was the lead guitarist and, as I understand, he came upw/ the solos in their songs and made subtle contributions that were vital to creating the "Beatles sound." He wasntin Hendrix's or Clapton's league as a guitarist but he was very solid. Toward the end of the Beatles' time, he was writing very good songs like "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something"
He was the first Beatle to have a #1 solo album (All Things Must Pass). He was a big part in getting the Beatles to quit touring and concentrate on working in the studio, a move which really elevated the creativity and richness of their music between 1967 and 1970.
He organized the first all-star charity concert, "The Concert for Bangladesh" You could argue that there would be no LiveAid/Concert for Diana or other concerts without George.
George smoked weed and dropped acid a bit, but he never, to the best of my knowledge, was a heavy user.
He had opinions and did in fact talk; he really was "quiet" only in relation to the other Beatles. Paul Simon once said "George isn't particularly quiet, he just doesn't demand to be heard."

i don't think he was so great.like ringo he he happened to be a part of one of the greatest bands of the century.
of the four beatles he wrote the best songs , he helped produce the first rock concert that donated the money for a cause , [ bangla desh]
Made him great? The fact that he hung out with three other guys and the four of them put together some of the best rock we've ever had.
All The Beatles were great, but in most opinions, he wrote the best (most meaningful songs, check While My Guitar Gently Weeps)
