I read in a magazine recently that Kanye West is really outspoken about social issues. It said that he's very much against all the rampant homophobia in hip hop music, for example. Aside from the "George Bush doesn't care about black people" thing, I don't know anything about him (or his music). What else has he done publicly to protest social problems?

For one, he co-founded the Kanye West Foundation with his mother (who was at Chicago State U's English dept.). The foundation focuses on educational issues, looking at dropout, literacy and teacher training.
He has also been involved with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, LIFEbeat, the Food Bank for New York City, and the Lunchbox Fund.
