He was a drug addict who had constant stomach pain. He hated the way his "handlers" kept him away from people, and overall, had no idea how to cope with his fame. He never wanted to be the "voice of a generation", he just tried to express his own pain.
Listen to the words of Nirvana songs. His suicide shouldn't have really surprised anyone. Saddened, sure, but not surprised.
That, and courtney love was his wife.
