Are the actors in daytime soaps all that famous?!
Question: I'm trying to get a handle on the cult of the American daytime soap and was wondering how close in terms of celebrity these actors are to the hollywood A-listers. And what type of money can they earn.

No as a whole, daytime actors aren't as famous as say someone on a nighttime series. Susan Lucci is of course famous. Most of the time. people start out on soaps and then go on to other things and become famous. Eva Longoria is a perfect example of that. and some establishe actors will do role on soaps too.
For some peason, soap salaries are vey closely guarded but a newcomer can make around $700 and episode as you gain experience in the business you earn more. An established veteran in the biz with say 10+ years can make around $3000 an episode. Maybe more. those are just ballpark figures.
I believe they earn pretty good money and can get the opportunity to become even bigger stars.

Demi Moore- General Hospital
Meg Ryan- As the world Turns
Kevin Bacon- Search for tomorrow
Ray Liotta- Another world
Marisa Tomei- As the World Turns
Tommy Lee Jones- One Life to Live
Rick Springfield- General Hospital
Susan Sarandon- A World Apart
Sarah Michelle Gellar- All my Children
And Halle Berry, George Clooney, Jimmy Smits, Heath Ledger, Allison Janney, Parker Posey and Lindsay Lohan all started on soap too.
They are very famous in their "circles" there a lot of fans that religiously follow their lives, but they are not very famous in mainstream, they are not A listers, but they do make good money, and some of them can go on to be A listers and star in prime time and movies, like you said their fame is very cult like (not in a bad way necessairly) with people who adore them and their characters on the shows they play, but they are not likely to be followed by paps and be featured in magazines. (although sometimes they are)
