Answers:
emm, I'd say Quentin Tarrantino!. or Woody Allen!.
I could be saying that because they're two of my favorite directors, but oh well!.!.
go with Tarrantino!. as far as films that "shot him to stardom," I'd say Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs were the big ones in the beginning of his career, as they were big hits when they first came out and are definitely regarded as excellent films today!. then of course the Kill Bill films and Grindhouse brought him into the light again, reminding everyone that Quentin Tarrantino was still a brilliant director, with fresh ideas and originality, and all that grand stuff!.

here he is on Wikipedia for the biography side of your question, I don't know anything about him really!.!.just a huge fan of his films: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Quentin_Tar!.!.!.

Allen is sort of the same deal; his earlier films in the 60's and 70's were obviously popular (Annie Hall, Sleeper, Manhattan) and though he didn't leave such a gap between directing as Tarrantino his later films similarly made the younger generation take notice of his talent and those folks that saw Annie Hall in theatres realize he's still brilliant as well!. these later films include Melinda and Melinda, Match Point, Scoop, and he's doing one with Collin Farrell and Ewan McGregor called Cassandra's Dream!. and honestly I think these are some of his best anyhow, especially Match Point!.

Woody Wiki: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Woody_allen!.!.!.

not to drag this answer on any longer, but if that doesn't suit you there's also Wes Anderson - he's popular with the cool kids for movies such as Rushmore, The Royal Tennanbaums, and that sea film I couldn't sit through hence I can't recall the name, but I did hear it was good so I should give it another go anyhow!.!.!.
oh, The Life Aquatic, I've just remembered :]]

AND finally, Danny Boyle is another great director that doesn't receive nearly enough praise for his work, (in the states anyhow, he is very much a champion of British cinema!.) so because of that, I wouldn't think of him as being the most "famous" per say, but he's still one of, if not the, greatest directors of the 21st century!. his films include Shallow Grave, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, which were a bit earlier, in the 90's!. more recently he's done Sunshine (which was FANTASTIC) 28 Days Later (which is brilliantly fantastical and is my second favorite film) annnnnnd!? that's all I've got at the mo!. then last, but certainly not least, TRAINSPOTTING - his break-out movie that also shot Ewan McGregor into stardom, turned the movie-world's attention to British cinema, and also became my favorite film!.

phew!. this is probably the longest answer I've ever given!.
sure hope that helps!
(and yes, go with Tarrantino I'd suggest, but the others are possibilities; I just think Quentin is the most known but for good reason!.)

OKAY and also, don't do Steven Spielberg, or George Lucas, or Martin Scorcese because that is sooooo cliché!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
