This usage dates back to the 1978 Jonestown Masacre!.
A radical agricultural colony consisting mostly of American Citizens belonging to Jim Jone's California People's Temple cult set up to start a new life and a new way of life in Guyana!.
It was wiped out when its fanatical leader; Jim Jones - believing his efforts to have failed, called the 900 inhabitants of Jonestown to a meeting where every man, woman and child was ordered to drink the soft drink which had been poisoned by Jones!. it is a fruity soft drink, similar to the "isotonic drinks" we get in Europe!. It is not fizzy, it's just sort of flat tasting!.
