Why do we not respect our elderly or aging celebrities? Madonna, Cher, etc.?!

Question: Why do we not respect our elderly or aging celebrities!? Madonna, Cher, etc!.!?
Instead of celebrating the few lasting celebrities, that really made worldly impacts, and treating them like gold, buying their music, and praising them, like (Madonna, cher, whitney, etc), okay so some succumbed to crack, but still, instead of honoring our celebrities, the older ones,

we as a country choose to make fun of them, call them over, stop supporting them, radio cuts them out, and we mock them, make fun of them for their age, and many things!.

Why!? Because we devote all of our love and attention ONLY to what's current!. Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, American Idol!.

Even though these people may not ever reach proportions of Madonna, etc, they still get tons of more respect!.

How can someone, who was as relevant, and famous, and rich as Madonna, and I guess I'm picking on her since she's a really big name artist who really doesn't get much respect these days, how can people utterly trash that!?

We even trash has beens from the 90s! Alicia, etc!.

WHY!? It's mean!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Unfortunately, America has long been a culture that has valued youth over age!. Even back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, aging celebrities were treated pretty harshly!.

Example!? Look at the treatment of middle aged female celebrities in the 1950 movie Sunset Boulevard! The role of Norma Desmond was turned down by Mae West, Pola Negri, Mary Pickford and a number of other actresses because of what they felt the movie implied about them !.!.!. and in fact Louis B!. Mayer considered the movie an insult and told director Billy Wilder he should be "tarred and feathered and ran out of Hollywood" for making the movie!

or consider the 1962 suspense movie "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane!?" and what it implied about aging child actors!. You see Bette Davis as "Baby Jane" Hudson dressed up like a child, despite her advanced years!.!.!.and looking and acting as delusional as possible!.

It's said that the one thing that the fans of silent screen star Mary Pickford never forgave her for was getting older!. Her fans treated that human condition as though it were some sort of personal betrayal!. As though Pickford was expected to be "America's Sweetheart" her entire life while the rest of the world moved on!. As if she was supposed to be that cute little girl forever, despite the fact that she was much older, had been married and divorced, and had even cut her hair from the ringlets that made her a star back in the 1910s and 1920s!.

My point for mentioning this!? To show that the preference towards youthfulness in Hollywood has been there all along, and it's really not a new phenomenon!.

Now thanks to the Internet and other technology, people have gotten even more unforgiving and dismissive where age and celebrities are concerned!. It seems like a celebrity is damned if you do and damned if you don't!. If a star shows signs of aging, she's slammed by bloggers and paparazzi!. If she gets Botox or other cosmetic surgery, she's STILL slammed! Some of the celebrity gossip websites out there are just downright hateful and meanspirited!.!.!.and all that plays right into the fickleness of fandom!. One almost has to wonder if it's not a version of "planned obsolescence!."

Ever notice that unless an older celebrity has done something really profound or outrageous either performance wise or their personal life, they are pretty much ignored by all but their most die hard fans!.!.!.and even those fans STILL tend to idolize their favorite star as the youthful versons of themselves compared to what they are now or would be like if the celebrity were alive today!. Example: Elvis fans want to see Elvis as he was in 1957, not how he was when he died in 1977!. Do you think they'd be as enamored of him as old and fat!? Hardly!.

Just think of all the concerts one attends when the fans only want to hear a band's old hits, and not their new work!.!.!.and if that band doesn't sing their "signature" hit song for the umpteenth time, as though he or she is only supposed to be a nostalgia act rather than a currently talented star!.!.!.the fans complain bitterly!.!.!.but then you have those who hang the label one hit wonder on the person despite having other top 40 hit records, or even having made records in recent years! Rick Springfield is a good example here!. Everyone knows "Jessie's Girl" but don't realize he's had 17 top 40 hits, a sizable fanbase and even has a new album coming out in July! Nope, they're too busy focusing on the Jonas Bros!.

and what of actors who are remembered for one movie they made in their 20s even though they're now in their 40s and they've made LOTS of other movies since then!? Case in point!? Matthew Broderick still seen as "Ferris Buhler" 25 years or so after the movie came out!

Not fair, but that's just how it is!.!.!.!.and someday these young pups who are currently enjoying stardom now will probably have to deal with the same fate as they get older!. You may want to keep in mind the words of the first American woman news anchor Dorothy Fuldheim, who incidentally started her TV career in Cleveland, Ohio at age 54!. She once said "We are living in a youth oriented society, but the joke is on them because youth is a disease from which we all recover!"Www@Enter-QA@Com

When poetica mentioned "planned obsolescence," this pointed to another part of the problem -- the advertising of people and products!. Out with the old, in with the new!. Tired of that product, throw it away and get a new one!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Madonna and Cher!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!. ELDERLY!. Now that's funny!. LMAOWww@Enter-QA@Com

Great question!. That's because most people as a rule have no minds of their own and PRETEND to like a fashion or music trend like E! or The Jonas Brothers just so they won't get laughed at at school for secretly liking Lionel Richie!. For me, I was never a follower of the "music scene" or "What's Hot and What's Not"!. Because in the end, who's going to care about that crap in 500 years anyway!? Besides if you really think about it, the term "has-beens" is not offensive at all, just that people, especially little teenagers pretend to forget about them!.

Thats okay though, because real, I mean, REAL music will comeback and be more explosive than ever!. If you went to on Yahoo yesterday, I'm quite sure most of us saw (I did anyway) the 25 worst rappers of all time!. People will get tired of rap music, emo music, death metal music, pop music and move on!.

The Hills "stars" are even getting parts in movie roles and doing music!. WHAT!?! What about the hard working actors and musicians!? Well, thats America for you!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Excellent question!. A lot of younger folks don't give credit to the older artists!. Think about it!. Much of the newer music is an new version of the stuff that was "cutting edge", back in the day!. Even early rap doesn't get it's fair due, in my humble opinion!.

also, who's to say that an older artist can't come up with something new and exciting!.

Some people are simply trend followers!. Whoever has a lot of media exposure at the moment is the one that everyone raves about!. A true fan does not disparage an artist's age!.

What, if your over 30, you're all done!? Bull!. As you get older, you have had more time to hone your craft, and bring layers of artistry to the final product!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

BRAVO!I don't know your age, but it doesn't matter!. You've had the balls to address the elephant in the room,by which I mean the egregious lack of regard we as Americans have for our older citizens!. I don't know why or how it began but,it's almost as if at age 30-35,you're no longer viable or worthy of consideration of any kind,as if wisdom and experience have no value whatsoever!. The Europeans have it all over us when it comes to having respect and valuing their elderly while we,while not putting them on ice flows and sending them out to sea, systematically dismiss them(myself included)!. And it's straight across the board, except in Black or Latino communities(also Asian) where the mature are respected) Trust me, I know this from experience and whenever someone refers to my age in a disparaging way,I either push them down th stairs or remind them that considering the alternative, getting old is not that big a deal and it's certainly NOT for the faint of heart :-)Www@Enter-QA@Com
