My Little Pony? For boys or girls or both?

Somehow I missed the "My Little Pony" fad so I am looking for some general info. I have a granddaughter and grandson and one of the My Little Pony DVD's was at their house. My grandson seemed mesmerized by it. I watched it quite a few times and started to like it. Seemed like a little love story musical. I thought it was endearing. But my son seems a little put out that his boy is watching it.

Any information would be appreciated

I think they are made for little girls (my daughter loves them).
My 4 year old nephew also loves to watch the DVD's with my daughter. It doesn't make his father too happy either....lol
