The original roots of jazz is in the music of the African slaves. Back in the day, slave owners would have their slaves perform "minstrel" shows, with song and dance. Also, many of those slaves played various European instruments, such as the violin and trumpet. I believe that this was the first jazz music, although it was not called jazz at the time.
I guess you could say that Jazz is a product of the white man's harmonious classical music, marches and instruments combined with the rhythmical complexities and soulful melody of African music.
