Have We Even Got A Chance?

Hi, I'm 14, I'm in a band with my three friends. So far we have played Holiday by GreenDay, we've written our own song and played it, and we are going to play Territorial Pissings by Nirvana next week. Once we get better, I want us to be more well-known. What can we do to make ourselves more known? Is putting a video of ourselves on YouTube a good idea? Our band is called "Final Invitation".

I think covers can help your band (somewhat) but you won't get anywhere doing covers all the time. You need GIGS. Places where you can play your music and get listened too. At your age, coffee houses are the way to go, but eventually you want to get into bars and clubs. If you can find yourself a coffee house to hang out at and get to know other bands and who's booking them. This is important to get you into the scene. Absolutely without a doubt, the most important thing you need to do if you want to make music your life is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. If you don't commit to practicing and improving your skills, you WILL fail. People also respect somebody with knowledge too, learn as much as you can about music, history, where different sounds came from, how your gear works, SOAK it up. Keep writing, but you'll need to play familiar music every once in a while to get people excited and singing along. Even some of the best bands do covers. Make your covers though more interesting, not just ones that typical bands play (that's where your knowledge of history and music can play a role). And above all have fun and practice practice P-R-A-C-T-I-C-E.

Also, the myspace page is where somebody can look you up after they've see you play somewhere, so it serves a purpose, but by itself it won't do.

Also youtube not going to do you any good unless A. people know the song and search it, or B. people know YOU and search for your band. so playing a good cool (not overplayed easy) cover may do you some good there.
