I want to buy an acoustic guitar for around £200?!

Question:

I want to buy an acoustic guitar for around £200?

I have just bought a washburn EA18 electro acoustic which i was not happy with at all and did not sound right to me so i have taken this back now. So i want to buy just an acoustic but don't know which makes/models i should be looking at?

Just to let you know i am based in the UK so the link would not be relevant. Also the guitar was in tune but still did not sound right.

Some brands I'd consider with your budget (I've got seven guitars, and I'm a bit of a guitar nerd so I may be able to help you)

Yamaha-I know, you're thinking 'Yamaha for an acoustic?'. But they are great guitars, especially as you begin to edge towards the £200 price mark and beyond. Great guitars to learn on too. I've still got my Yamaha FG 402, which cost me £140 at the time, my first guitar. Served me very well. If you can go a little more expensive than me, you're guaranteed a good Yamaha acoustic.

Takamine-These might be a bit out of your budget, but are beautiful sounding guitars, great for sweet finger picking, and for full rhythm and chords after you've broken the guitar in. I've got a Takamine G series which was around £350, but was really worth every penny. Takamine guitars are like affordable alternatives to Martin acoustics, which are ridiculously expensive, but the holy grail of guitars.

Tanglewood-I've never played one, but everyone swears by Tanglewood guitars. Solid, sturdy, long-lasting and good all-round guitars. These start around the £200 mark I believe, so you could find a decent one with your budget I imagine.

Epiphone-these might be just a little out of your range, I'm not sure. But if you come across an Epiphone you can afford, I'd recommend giving it a blast. Great for heavy, chunky rhythm and solo/melody lines. I've never played an epiphone acoustic, but I do own an Epiphone semi-acoustic, which is by far the best distorted rhythm guitar I've played. I'm thinking about considering an Epiphone acoustic should I be buying another guitar. Epiphones are the affordable versions of Gibson guitars, which are great but way too expensive unless you're very rich or a guitar geek with too much money.

Freshman-these are quite good guitars from a relatively new company-my mate has one, and it made me realise I had to upgrade to a new guitar. Not too sure about prices for these guitars-think my mate paid around £300, but I'm sure cheaper models can be found. It's got a great bass sound, and sounds good for rhythm and finger picking.

Ibanez-another mate plays an Ibanez. Normally I'd steer clear of Ibanez because of its association with nu-metal bands. But the acoustic I played was beautiful, great, strong sounding rhythm guitar and perfectably capable for both solo/melody lines and fingerpicking. Again, I think my my friend paid around £300 for his model, so I can't really be sure about the models under this price.

The following are brands I'd avoid if you're looking for a long-term investment, or a serious guitar which won't make you look like an amateur in the long run-Stagg, Washburn, Ovation. Any brand that doesn't sell a guitar above £300 should pretty much be avoided in my opinion.

To be honest, if I was you and I had £200 for a guitar, I'd spend every last penny. If you could save up another £100-£150, you'd have a much greater variety and higher quality of guitar to look at. however, in this situation I would aim for a Takamine, an Epiphone or a decent Yamaha. Also, keep an eye open for obscure but cool brands, such as Crafter, who specialise in acoustic guitars. In some cases, you can stumble upon a gem of a guitar that no-one has heard of, but sounds great and unlike anything else around.

If it's possible, try trade in your old guitar as payment towards a new one. This will help you get access to more expensive guitars. Just don't let them rip you off though, because they will take the mick. Maybe try sell your washburn first, then use the money to increase your budget.

Anyway, I'm off to play my Takamine.

good luck!
