Answers:

Yeah man, this question does seem to come up a lot, haha. As a writer myself, rap is something completely different from classical songwriting. It's somewhat more difficult to compose (verbally) because it hungers for flow. In many rock, classical, opera, country, and blues pieces, you'll notice that the verses are actually much smaller than those of a hip hop song, yet the lyrics are much more compact, general, and deeply stimulating. In a hip hop song, the connection is direct -- the words are hard-hitting and picturesque, but still brilliant and poetic. All the same, this depends on exactly what kind of "rap" song you're talking about. If you're talking about the oldies (and even some of the new, but hidden, ones), the verse relies more on emotional impact rather than poetic beauty. Today's hip hop is, although quite a bit watered down, still hip hop. It still has the "catch" in it even though the lyrics may be offensive to some. I'm still trying to get 2-step out of my head as I write this, haha. Nah but seriously, there are some very talented hip hop artists emerging nowadays (in the dark). I'm talking about "underground" hip hop, the only safe refuge for in-the-making emcees nowadays lol. If you don't dig 50 and yung joc, I (as well as a lot of people) can understand you completely. If you dig Tupac, Nas, Biggie, Warren G, The Fugees, Common then you're on a different mindset (a much better one, in my opinion haha). Keep yourself up on today's lyrics and remember to be humble in your approach on any style of writing.

If you want some names of some exceptional, yet "still-in-the-making", artists, well then here you are: Magnetic North (my fav. by far), Benefit, Prizm, er..Vienna Teng (sp?), if you like a jazzy/hip hopish musician.
