My personal axiom: The only reason anyone (sane) lies is to protect themselves or someone else. One of my favorite variations on Murphy's Law:
"Everybody lies, but it doesn't matter, because nobody listens..."
Pretty much sums up the human condition, in my opinion.
At one time or another I have lied to just-about everyone. Sometimes it's to save feelings; sometimes to protect my job; sometimes because it's none of their business...and truthfully; sometimes because I can. As I get older I lie A LOT less....maybe because I no longer have much to protect myself from?? }:>
