Is there anyway to make my singing voice less raspy?!

Question:

Is there anyway to make my singing voice less raspy?

I used to have a really raspy singing voice, but as ive practiced on my own, its become clearer and clearer. However, I still have days where I can't hit the high notes I'd like to clearly (i can feel the rasp moreso than hear it) and days where I'm clear on every note and have no problems.

Is there any kind of technique i can use to reduce raspy-ness or any kind of practice I can do, or am I just stuck with what I got?

Answers:

Like someone else already said, don't sing from your throat.

Make sure you're backing up your sound with air from your diaphragm. if you're confused as to what I mean, try this:

Sit or stand up as straight as you can. Let your shoulders relax and keep your head forward. Now take your hands and place them on your abdomen. Take a deep breath. You should feel your rib cage expanding. Now tighten your abs. Your entire abdomen and rib cage need to stay like that while you're singing. It will improve your sound immediately!

It's hard to do at first, but it will feel and sound so much better.

And if you're still raspy, make sure you're drinking plenty of water and getting enough rest. No tobacco and absolutely no alcohol!

Have you maybe considered that what you're trying to sing isn't in your range? That could also be the problem. I don't know if you're male or female, but a lot of women try to be sopranos when they are really altos. There's nothing wrong with having a deeper voice. Just listen to Fiona Apple or Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls. Both women have deeper voices and are still amazing!

Just make sure you don't overdo it. If you're feeling strained or your throat is getting sore, stop singing. You don't want to do any damage to your voice.

Good luck!
