Personally I practice for like 4 hours a day and freakin shred. But do most people that say they 'play guitar' only strum chords?

The guitar is a total instrument..but most guitarist only explore one or two areas they enjoy within their comfort zone. The danger is you might not experience what your talent may produce and end up being a one trick pony.You need a good knowledge of both instrumental/chordal work on your guitar. In a typical band situation, the guitarist is going to be playing 80% rhythm and 20% solo/instrumental..so a good understanding of chords and progressions is fundamental to being a good guitarist. Knowing chord construction also helps with your lead ideas too, so it's all related. Freakin shred for 3 hours a day and 1 on chords..you'll be a better allround player guareenteed!
