In Full Metal Alchemist, how come Ed can't transmute automail?!

In Full Metal Alchemist, how come Ed can't transmute automail?
Why is it that Ed always needs Winrey to fix his Automail. Can't he fix it himself? I mean they can repair radios, can someone explain this to me?
Answers: Edward can repair his automail by his own, but his nerves
not,so he needs Winry to success his reparation its not like he can mold it into different things at one time, there are various necessary parts in automail, and if ed transmutes it, those objects like bolts, wires, and those will be turned into what he's transmuting transmuting is not something like magic, how can he connect those wires (or whatever) to his nerves?!
and by the way, he can't transmute in only one hand you know, and if you're gonna say he'd make a new automail when he has an automail already then I don't think he'd succeed in that, Winrey is a perfectionist in those stuffs, it's better to let Winrey handle it, she can make the best automail, we are talking about ed's hand afterall, he trusts in her!
