The Christmas money that Marge have been saving up was spent on removing Bart's tattoo - so Homer went to the dog track (he'd saved up a small amount of money working as a mall Santa) with Bart to try and fix things - he bet on "Santa's Little Helper" because hey - it was Christmas eve, and he was the longshot.
Santa's Little Helper came in last, and was abandoned by his owner in the parking lot. Seeing this, Homer and Bart rescued him and brought him home - and they had a happy Christmas after all. Source(s):
I'm a first episode where he appears in, he was a race track dog and his racing name was "santa's little helper" cause it was a racing greyhound and thats what its show name was. It was xmas time when they got it I think they just did not know what else to name it. Santa used to bet against the dog (who was a race dog) and cash in big. By being slow, the dog helped Santa out. Thus, Santa's Little Helper. the simpsons got him at the dog races at christmas time and his racing name which he raced with was called santas little helper... Homer went to the dog track and bet on Santa's Little Helper in a Christmas episode. The dog finished last and his owner abandoned him. Homer brought him home and that's how the Simpsons got him.
The name came from his dog racing owner. That was the name that his previous owner, who raced greyhounds for profit gave the dog. The dog lost the race and his owner was giving it the boot when Homer came along the dog ran straight to him. Homer got the dog on Christmas eve after he lost the race betting the last bit of money he was supposed to buy gifts with. He took the dog home and it was a hit with the kids and Marge, so they wound up keeping Santa's Little Helper. He was a racing greyhound and that was his racing name, but they kept that name after he was disposed of.
