In the original comics, they all wore red bandannas. When the cartoon series was created, however, the producers of the show wanted the turtles to wear different colors so that kids could tell them apart more easily, as well as putting their initials on their belts.

When the turtles were given colors, these were chosen:

Leonardo = blue
Donatello = purple
Raphael = red
Michelangelo = orange

For some reason, sometimes in the original cartoon series, Michelangelo had a yellow bandanna instead of an orange one...but orange is the "official" color for him.

Here are their weapons, if you're interested:

Leonardo = twin katanas (swords)
Donatello = bo staff
Raphael = twin sais
Michelangelo = twin nunchakus
