First, in Ch 234, the two statues at the Valley of the End were of the people who fought there before, and their lives were similar to Naruto's and Sasuke's. Madara had not been mentioned yet at this point. One statue is clearly of the First Hokage, the founder of Konoha.
When Madara is first mentioned, Ch 309, we knew nothing but his name. However, it was widely theorized that he was the second statue at the Valley of the End.
In Ch 370, Jiraiya says "Uchiha Madara's defeat by the First Hokage at the Valley of the End is something known to all".
I don't know if it says explicitly that they were friends. If you know that it did say it somewhere, then please describe it a little and I should be able to remember it and find it. (Like who said it to who, if the background was forest or buildings or rain or whatever, the position on the page, etc)
