What's the Asbestos reference in old cartoons all about?!

Question: In many Looney Toons and Mickey Mouse cartoons before the late 50's, I've seen the characters pull a curtain down that has "Asbestos" printed on it. I know what asbestos is, but I don't get the reference.

Back before the advent of electricity, theater stages were lit with candles or lanterns. If one was knocked over and the stage caught on fire, the asbestos curtain would be dropped to put out the fire or keep the fire from spreading to the audience.

It was probably a sub-liminal message to get you to but products that has asbestos in it for better insulation.

Or it could have been a curtain that was made from something laying around that has that word on it.

Or it could mean nothing at all.
