  • that is a very very good question, I like them both, Lets wait and see!!

    the voice actors sound bad

I like subtitled anime when I have time to watch it, especially if it has a fantasy theme- because it makes it that much more fantasy when I have no idea what they're saying. Also allot of the time the dubbed voiced don't suit the characters as well as the original voices.
Most of the time I do watch, well , listen to dubbed because I draw while I watch and I'm only looking at the screen 1/8th of the time.

When they dub over the original they change what they say so it'll match up, so not everything is how it's supposed to be. Also, they choose American voice actors who over exaggerate so something serious turns out being super silly.

Some dubbed voices make the characters sound stupid and they seem different from the original.
But yeah i also like both.
    haha.

the main point why i hate dubbed anime is the voice acting quality. most of the time the feeling is way off than the original voice actor. however there are some dubbed anime is quite good such as yuyu hakusho.

I personally like subbed anime better because in dubbed anime the voice actors are pretty bad and they change some things which changes the anime and makes it inaccurate. Subbed anime you get the 100% Japanese anime.

well in my opinion,, is not that they don't like it raw or dub is that we/the people like it original. But sometimes we don't know the language so we need subs..or it could be because of likeness of japanese voices...and/or it's funny.

Often times, the person who created the anime has the say only in the Japanese voice cast but then companies such as Funimation get to choose the English voice cast so it ruins the vision that the creator had in mind.

Sometimes certain animes will be changed to appeal to the American audience where as the subtitles will still stay true to the original. This is exempified in Dragon Ball Z (popular example) where in the Japanese version the characters power level was 5,000, but when they redubbed it to appeal to Americans they changed it to "Over 9,000"

So the japanese dub with english sub is more for the hardcore anime lovers who want the experience the way it was intended.

    The voice actors are horrible

They prefer it because they believe the original Japanese voice actors are more talented and sound better than their English counterparts (they don't. They sound just as stupid. It just doesn't seem that way because the person watching the sub probably doesn't know much of the Japanese language) or because they "change" the original meaning of the sentence (this rarely EVER happens and the only time it's done nowadays is because there isn't a suitable English equivalent).

not only are the voice actors normally terrible, but often times they're out of sync, flat sounding and emotionless

i don't know what either one is, but dubbed anime sounds better than subbed anime. subbed anime sounds if it is located low, under, or beneath something.

The voice actors on the dubbed one sound terrible!

I like it. I hate dubbed. The voices are unatural and do not suit the characters. It seems wierd to me when I her it in english. Anyway it is not THAT hard to learn how to read fast.

I Like subbed anime than dubbed anime because it is more natural, the voice it is more funny or more serious when original voice is used. And besides I know how to speak little japanese because of watching subbed animes. sugoi desu ne.

because the english dub sounds bad, the american actor dont put enough effort into dubbing an anime in most cases, and i hate it how americans always/sometimes give bad character dodgy english accents

    on the flip side
the only reason why i hate subs is that they move too fast, but then again they teach you how to read fast too. (^-^)

i personally HATE dubbed anime due to the fact that i feel that the voices are sometimes annoying (chibi usa's voice ring a bell?). plus, sometimes the dubbers edit things cuz they don't think it's "appropriate". for example, sailormoon-we all know that uranus and neptune were lovers (if you don't, now you do) but in the dubbed, they were very close "cousins". yeah...so that's why i hate dubbed....they ruin the anime..

Spookysickness, this is mainly a reply to you, but I think this answers the original question as well.

I belong to a college anime club. We aren't the kind of club that watches old dubbed anime, or new episodes of Naruto. Instead we watch fresh anime that just aired in Japan, and we always watch subbed. There are two people from Japan in our club, and one from China that speaks Chinese, English, and Japanese. We have three students who have Japanese as one of their majors, and a handful more that have taken more than one Japanese language class. I myself am nowhere near as knowledgable as they are, only knowing a few hundred words in Japanese. With all these different backgrounds, we unanimously agree that the original audio is almost always vastly superior to the English dub, with rare exceptions for some of the most popular series and feature lengthed films. Even then the dubs are only on par with the originals.

Also, are you seriously argueing that the English dubbers are just as good as their Japanese counterparts when they recieve vastly less pay? Maybe I would take your opinion more seriously (even if you are a student whose studied Japanese for a while), if you didn't already dislike anime. It seems more likely that you are just frustrated by most people's assumtption that since you are a Japanese major you must love anime, and are now trying to vent your anger on us by saying how all anime voice acting, and therefore all anime is crap.

It just depends. Most mainstream anime, like the kind they show on TV is good. but I'm just used to watching it with subs. I just saw Death Note last night and I have to say that I still enjoy the sub better. not that the dub is bad. But I like the original VA's. Plus also.a lot of other animes do have very bad dubs. I don't know why though.

It's just a matter of preference. However I do detest "anime snobs" who feel that there is some kind of "anime rule" to watch these programs. There isn't.

The animes in my country are dubbed in our native language (not English), but I find them hard to impress compared to the subbed ones for two reasons.

    First, the voice.

Japanese seiyuus did a great job giving life to the characters; their voices match the personality of these characters, but I find that in my native language, their life was "ruined" by non-matching voices (in Naruto, Tsunade sounded like a 14-year-old girl) and men sounded like little boys. These dubbers failed to express the characters, what they should sound like in certain situations, they all sounded flat and boring.

    Second, the language usage.

Japanese seiyuus used their daily language in every conversations; some used formal but not too formal. On the other hand, the native-speaking dubbers tend to use tooooooooooo formal language, making the whole anime sounded awkward. This gives me an instant laugh, and bleeding ears that screamed not to watch it ever, EVER again. Only a few had decent language usage that I feel comfortable in.

If I had to choose whether to read whatever was on screen and to listen to the dub, I'd pick the former. Only if the dub was great, then I'll pick the latter.

k 1st english voice actors sound corny 2 engligh episodes are usually edited like naruto says im gonna fukin kill u to someone but in the english version he wont

    Mostly because :
    - it ruins the anime.
    - it ruins the personality of the characters in the anime.
e.g. A guy has this sweet and kind personality, which makes sense if he has a sweet kind voice (almost like a girl's voice) in subbed, but the dubbed has a really deep, manly voice which CHANGES THE PERSONALITY COMPLETELY.
    - it looks as if the actor in the dubbed version doesn't put enough effort, without any expression in the voice (if you know what I mean)
    - the dubbed kinda changes the anime because they think it is not appropriate for the audience WHICH RUINS IT!!!
    - the subbed helps the audience to learn Japanese a little which makes it kinda fun.
