Why do people hate anime so much?!

Question: I just don't understand. Sure, i'm only fifteen, but I don't see why people hate it so much. In Japan even 30 year olds can watch it, so why can't we? Is it because it wasn't made it America, or cause it's sometimes too violant. It's not like all anime is fighting all the time. You have to look at the little lessons they put into each episode. Why can't anyone see that!?

I don't know what "people" you mean - I assume that some of the folks you've run into were very dismissive. But in general, people are often dismissive of other people's hobbies. Maybe you have a friend who obsesses about sports or a band. :-)

But there's a lot of complex social factors involved in that question. In Japan, just like here in the west, anime/cartoons are pretty much seen as for being for children and geeks. In Japan, *manga* is popular across most ages and both genders, but not anime. Most anime is watched by geek guys, sort of the kind of typical sci-fi fan here in the 80's.

Anime is much more mainstream these days, and manga is very popular, but there's always going to be people who don't "understand" why you like it. If someone asks you (agressively) to defend why you like it, maybe you can pick one thing and say simply. "I ike the art," or "I enjoy the character development" and then maybe ask what that person enjoys. Perhaps you'll find out something new - and at any rate, you'll stop an annoying rant before it starts. :)

In the meantime, to help you keep enjoying anime, don't worry what other people think or say, and just watch or read what you like, because you like it!

Erica

bc it's stupid to some and not to others, personally, i don't like it. to each his own

I believe less adults take a liking to it because it is reminicent of childish and immature.

wax onnnn!! wax offf!!

Not everyone hates anime..... It's just that some people don't like it. there are alot of people who though.... everyone has their own preferences...

Everything is subject to one's taste. It is the same reason that someone will like dramas and not scifi.

I think it may have something to do with racism, because anime comes from a different country then ours, I for one, love anime, and manga, even though I used to hate it, but that's probably because I didn't understand it, but now that I'm older, I LOVE IT!!!

I too believe that racism has a lot to do with it. I also believe that more older adults can only relate to "dumbed down" cartoons and cannot handle animation with complex plots and characters. I also believe ignorance plays a vital role too. Unfortunately, you will see a lot of "anime haters" on this board that cannot discuss their dislike of anime in an intelligent manner but only write "anime sucks" "none are any good". You cannot win over stupidity. Just enjoy what you love.

A lot of people associate cartoons with children and expect mature adults to do more "adult" activities like working, having a family, etc. When the see anime they stereotype it as a general cartoon that is meant for children without knowing its origins and content. Take for example, Spongebob Squarepants. Many adults watch that (idotic) show and say it's just crude humor, but when it comes to someone watching anime with an actual story plot, they call them geeks, nerds, and every other derogatory word in the book.

I saw some of the later comments on this and I wanted to put my two cents in.

Sure, I'm not a fan at all of manga and/or anime, only because I like realistic drawings of the human body. I know, I'm a comic book geek, and thusly, most of the human bodies in the comics, while following those anatomy and physiology books closer than anime/manga, aren't ALL that realistic, but I digress.

And the shows I've seen seems to give me a feel of those horribly subtitled japanese shows where the mouths are continuously moving, and yet they've finished talking...

But I will defend people's rights to watch, read, listen to whatever they so please.

What DOES irritate me, even now (ever since I've started answering questions here), is the fact that there's a LOT of (what seems to me) inane questions about various anime/manga shows on here... like "Is Naruto HOT????" and variations upon that theme. That could be a reason why people don't like anime/manga.....

they think that just cause it is animated, it is a cartoon and therefore it is only for children to watch.

It lacks the true artistry of true animation, or even a smooth interface between cgi animation and true animation. When you take 3 still shots and show them over in order 40 times each to get 5 seconds of action animation, that's CHEAP. When you take two still, one overlaying the other and rotate (and possibly zoom in or out of at the same time) the image to simulate action, that's not animation. Add in the cheezy way the characters are drawn, huge eyes, micro noses, hair that you couldn't find on a self respecting mop. Then finally have characters as, for instance, the alien Green onion eaters, and Anime is just plain pathetic.

Many people thinks it's immature. They have no imagination.

The people that hate anime don't have a good sense in taste.
They actually prefer the American animation(like Family Guy...ugh...I hate that show...)
The only American animation I can stand is Drawn Together and South Park.
