Ghost in the shell is it more of a complex than action anime or is ther more act!

Question: All of Ghost in the Shell has existential philosophy at its core.

The movies focus heavily on it, giving a lot of questions about what it means to be alive and at what point does someone stop being human. It also goes out of its way to not even try to answer the questions it raises, leaving that up to the viewer to decide for themselves.

Stand Alone Complex (2 serieses and a movie so far) put much more emphasis on action. There is still some philosophy in it, mostly focusing on how much of an individual would still exist if they are constantly plugged directly into the Internet and having direct brain-to-brain contact that way. And there's a constant element of mystery, as you are following a police team on assignment, but for the most part aren't shown things they don't know about or shown their hunches are wrong until they figure that out themselves. I'd call it 60% action / 25% philosophy / 15% mystery, but the action tends to come in bursts.

I describe the Ghost in the Shell franchise as mecha/police/action. It is an anime where you really do think about the plot. It's not one of those animes where the "villan" stands out and is easily recognizable. You can compare the storylines to todays political headlines.
